Independent producer Joe Richman scoured South Africa for rare recordings of Nelson Mandela for a five-part radio documentary.

Titled Mandela: An Audio History, the series uses rare sound recordings to document the struggle against apartheid.

He tells NPR's Tony Cox how he discovered them. Richman also produces "Radio Diaries," a series on NPR's All Things Considered.
