American Castles

What is a castle? There is no absolute definition. The estates below have come to be known as castles for different reasons. Some are modeled after European castles that once housed medieval nobles. Others reflect a personal fantasy of what a castle should be, fueled by a desire to live like royalty. As David Macaulay, an illustrator and author of the book Castle, says, "The visual aspect of a castle is as potent as the defensive structure."
