Pete Seeger: Newport Folk 2009WFUV

Hear The Entire Concert

Closing Saturday at Folk Festival 50, legendary folksinger Pete Seeger and his grandson, Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, led a hootenanny with some of their closest friends and musicians. What is a hootenanny, exactly? Think of it as a jam session in which folk musicians riff on old standards, join in each other's songs and generally have a good time.

This year marks two big folk-music anniversaries — 50 years of Newport and 90 years of Pete Seeger — so it's only fitting that Seeger would lead two nights of revelry and reflection. Influential as both a musician and a rabble-rouser, he's inspired countless musicians and activists to pick up their instruments and fight. In recent years, Seeger has been awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Harvard Arts Medal, the Kennedy Center Award, the Presidential Medal of the Arts and a Lifetime Legends medal from the Library of Congress. On his 90th birthday, Seeger celebrated at Madison Square Garden with a host of special guests, including Bruce Springsteen and Emmylou Harris.
