Gifted 21-year-old guitarist and composer Roy Guzman is one of many exciting young musicians to perform at the Newport Jazz Festival this year. Guzman, who is currently attending the Berklee College of Music — and has been mentored by notables such as Mick Goodrick, Greg Osby and Miguel Zenon — has a sound comparable to that of fellow guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel.
Originally from Cupey, Puerto Rico, Guzman began playing Latin and classical guitar at the age of 8 before turning to jazz and establishing himself as part of a burgeoning scene in San Juan. More recently, Guzman was the recipient of the Billboard Magazine Endowed Scholarship, presented to Berklee's most promising musician entering his or her final year. He is also the recipient of the Jimi Hendrix Award, presented to the college's top guitarist.
The Roy Guzman Quintet also features Billy Buss on trumpet, Michael Sachs on saxophone, Greg Chaplin on bass and drummer Mark Whitfield Jr. Guzman has released two albums with his previous group, Orbits Quintet.
