Playing songs from their debut album Astro Coast, Surfer Blood made quite a splash at our SXSW day party. After the show, frontman JP Pitts made sure to thank NPR for "facilitating his life as a pizza delivery driver" in recent years. Interestingly, Surfer Blood joined the ranks of the other bands we featured at SXSW this year who had enhanced rhythm sections — their second drummer also played keys during the show. With a combination of crunchy guitar sounds, melodic fuzz, and feedback, the band took the prize for the screechiest act up to that point; in the best of ways.

They may be from West Palm Beach, Fla., and they may have a seriously reverb-soaked beach-rock sound. They may even write songs with titles like "Swim" and "Floating Vibes." But in spite of all of this, Surfer Blood's four members say they don't have a drop of surfer blood between them. The band's self-described "anthemic, bombastic, life-affirming indie-pop" project seems to have arisen as spontaneously as its name, which came up when one of its members shouted it out in a car at random.

The young group began recording its first album, Astro Coast, in its University of Florida dorm room. It ended up scrapping the recordings in favor of a better recording environment, but the album retains the fresh, upbeat energy of a college dorm room. The guitar work, which has been compared to the early music of Built To Spill and Weezer, provides a crunchy backdrop for music that is, at its core, lighthearted and laid-back.

Surfer Blood has already attracted considerable buzz in the U.K., and has toured with similar bands such as Japandroids. The group will perform as part of NPR Music's daytime party in Austin, Texas, on March 18.
