Loudon Wainwright III has been coming to Mountain Stage since 1988. For his latest appearance, host Larry Groce gets to introduce him as a Grammy winner. Wainwright, along with producer Dick Connette, won Best Traditional Folk Album in 2010 for High, Wide and Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project, an album of songs written or inspired by the legendary banjo player and entertainer.
Wainwright performs two tracks from that album, plus material from his follow-up release, Songs for the New Depression. Topical songs have always been a strength of Wainwright, who captures the economic state of the new millennium in "Times Is Hard," "House" and "Cash for Clunkers."
This segment originally ran May 18, 2010.
