Ken Vandermark was born across the bay from Newport, but Chicago's tight-knit and thriving progressive scene now lays claim to one of the most prolific musicians anywhere. His Powerhouse Sound band starts from funk and dub rhythms; on stage at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I., they'll be meticulously reconfigured and dished out with zealous improvisation.
