In a recent lecture at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, a panel of guests gathered to examine how the Global Network Initiative can defend free speech on the internet.

In countries where freedom of speech and expression isn’t guaranteed, internet companies like Google and Youtube are finding it difficult to offer their services. In 2008, the Global Network Initiative was created to help prevent this type of censorship.

The GNI is an international non–profit dedicated to preventing online censorship, as well as ensuring individual privacy rights.

Guests at the Hertie School include Google’s Public Policy Director Susan Pointer, who is based in London, and Arvind Ganesan, Director of Business and Human Rights at the Human Rights Watch in Washington, DC.

This discussion is the first in a six-part series that will continue through Spring 2011, sponsored by the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin and the Human Rights Watch.
