Set List

  • "Ariel"
  • "Nothin' but a Miracle"
  • "Fools"
  • "Don't Wait Up"
  • "Valentino"
  • "Soul Waltz" by Julie Adams and the Mountain Stage Band

Though she's still in her mid-20s, singer-songwriter and pianist Diane Birch has done a lot of traveling. Birch was born to a South African father, a conservative pastor whose ministry meant that his family traveled heavily.

Often compared to the works of Laura Nyro and Karen Carpenter, Birch's debut album, Bible Belt, highlights her Rhodes-drenched, hook-driven songs. Here, she performs her work on grand piano along with her band: Jay Frederick on drums (also a member of Mountain Stage guest Yarn), Jay Foote on bass, Alex Foote on guitar and Eric Bloom on trumpet.

Mountain Stage house vocalist Julie Adams and the Mountain Stage Band also perform "Soul Waltz," a song written by NRBQ founding guitarist Steve Ferguson, who died in 2009.

This Mountain Stage concert originally aired on January 13, 2010.
