Hot Rize made its last appearance on Mountain Stage in 1990, the same year it was the first group named "Entertainer of the Year" by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA). It was one of the first nationally recognized groups to appear on Mountain Stage in the show's mid-1980s beginnings.
Formed in 1978 in Colorado, Hot Rize quickly became one of the hottest groups in the genre and recorded six successful albums and a live video, released in 2002. Featuring mandolin player Tim O'Brien, bassist Nick Forester, guitarist Charles Sawtelle and banjo player Pete Wernick, Hot Rize's original line-up was maintained until Sawtelle's death in 1999. The group reconvened with widely renowned guitarist Bryan Sutton handling guitar duties.
The group performs some of its well-known material, including Ola Belle Reed's "High on a Mountaintop" (from the group's 1979 debut Hot Rize) and the Flatt & Scruggs staple "Goin' Across the Sea."
