Liz Phair rose to prominence in 1993 thanks to her debut album, Exile In Guyville, what she describes as a song-for-song response to The Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St. and a reaction to the boy's club style of the indie-rock scene in Chicago, where she lived at the time.
But the overwhelming wave of initial success is only a small part of Phair's lengthy career. In 2003, Phair released a self-titled album that made it on to the Billboard charts behind its single, "Why Can't I."
Though Phair has had difficult experiences with record labels and becoming a mother, she often countered the hard times with optimism and wit. Her latest album, Funstyle, not only returns to her rockier roots, but displays styles that air on the side of the experimental, including rapping.
