Born on the outskirts of Philadelphia, Kurt Vile exudes a warm grasp of classic rock and modern form. His performances are often marked by a jumble of influences, from Leonard Cohen and My Bloody Valentine to Animal Collective.

Vile began songwriting and recording when his father bought him a banjo at 14. Soon after, he started releasing home-recorded albums. Tapping into what soon became a passion, he switched to guitar and began playing as many shows as possible. Vile hopped around different labels, releasing several albums along the way. His latest, Smoke Ring For My Halo, will be released in March on esteemed Matador Records.

Hear Vile perform from the World Cafe Live stage, part of WXPN's Live Fridays concert series.
