The Goethe Institut in Washington, D.C. recently held a discussion between German and American authors comparing political consumerism.

The session examined some of the food industry's promises, what a balanced and sustainable diet looks like, and ways for consumers to keep having the last word about food.

Panelists included freelance journalist for Die Zeit Tanja Busse, who has authored two books on the subject.

Also present was author Mark Winne. Winne has worked for forty years as a community food activist and his latest book examines the relationship between food and human freedom.

The event was moderated by Erik Assadourian from Worldwatch Institute.
