Set List

  • "Morning Dove"
  • "Clifton Bridge"
  • "Little Bird of Freedom"
  • "Bee Hive"
  • "Many Colored Kite"

Alternative country and folk veteran Mark Olson has performed on Mountain Stage twice before — most recently in 2001 with the Creekdippers alongside Victoria Williams, and first in 1995 with the pioneering band he helped co-found, The Jayhawks.

This was his first visit as a proper solo artist, backed by his longtime collaborator Mike "Razz" Russell on fiddle and Ray Woods on percussion. Olson delivers a brave and hauntingly melodic set, highlighted by his distinct and lovely voice. Olson plays a selection of songs from his most recent solo projects, Salvation Blues and Many Colored Kite. He closes with the title track of the latter, which features the Appalachian dulcimer in a way you've likely never heard before.

This segment originally ran on April 12, 2011.
