Guantanamo Timeline: Key Events and Decisions

On January 11, 2002, when the U.S. government opened the prison at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, 20 detainees suspected of terrorism against the U.S were held there. Almost a decade a later, 779 detainees have been through the facility and 172 remain. Many questions remain about the policies of the detention center and the rights of the detainees who continue to be held there.
