In spite of what the name might suggest, The Civil Wars' sound is built entirely around the gentle, yearning harmonies and effervescent chemistry of Joy Williams and John Paul White. Santa Cruz and Muscle Shoals natives respectively, the indie-folk duo first met at a songwriting workshop in Nashville two and a half years ago and quickly began to capture the public's attention.
The Civil Wars' second performance was released as a live album on the band's website and has been downloaded more than 130,000 times. The group's first full-length studio album, Barton Hollow, was released in February and debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200, and was the top album on iTunes for the same week. The song "Poison and Wine," featured in a climactic montage in an episode of Grey's Anatomy, acted as an entry point for a lot of listeners.
The duo's soaring five-song Mountain Stage appearance is capped by Julie Adams and the Mountain Stage band's performance of Billy Bragg's "Fourteenth of February."
