Jimmie Dale Gilmore is no stranger to Mountain Stage audiences, having appeared on the show five times since 1991, in addition to several appearances with The Flatlanders. This time, he's joined by his friends The Wronglers, an eight-piece bluegrass outfit headed up by San Francisco music-impresario-banjoist Warren Hellman. A true steward of American roots music, Hellman is the founder and benefactor of the wildly popular Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival.
After playing a few dates with the Wronglers at summer festivals, Gilmore was satisfied enough to propose that they record an album and tour. Together, they play an assortment of standards from the earliest days of country music, including the Carter Family's "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes," and the Bill Monroe bluegrass landmark "Uncle Pen." Gilmore's new album is called Heirloom Music.
This segment originally aired on June 29th, 2011.
