The three musicians that make up Appalachian Voices had already established their own careers when they converged to make Dear Companion. The album was written and performed by Kentucky musicians Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore and produced by Jim James of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. United by their concerns about the practice of mountaintop removal coal mining and its affects on the Appalachian region from which they call came, the three toured as "Appalachian Voices" to play material from Dear Companion.

Vocalist and cellist Sollee has performed on Mountain Stage as a solo artist and as a member of Abigail Washburn's Sparrow Quartet. Moore plays guitar here and James plays guitars, bass and omnichord, joined by drummer Dan Dorff.
