There's a sweeping intensity to Anna Calvi's music that grabs you instantly. Her voice is so passionate — and her performances so intense — that it's almost easy to miss what a phenomenal guitarist she is. It's tough to take your eyes off her, whether she's reworking the '50s pop standard "Jezebel" (famously covered by Edith Piaf) or re-interpreting her own creations, like "Desire" and "Suzanne and I."

Calvi clearly has something special: Brian Eno has called her "the best thing since Patti Smith." The word "seductive" doesn't begin to describe the range of feelings she can evoke, and her powerful presence belies her shyness — just like one of her guitar heroes, Jimi Hendrix.
