River City Extension is one of several bands playing this year's Newport Folk Festival that seem to live by the simple motto, "More is more." Like Typhoon, the octet throws as much sound and as many bodies as possible at its genre-smashingly ambitious roots music, which stretches into worlds as far afield as folk and calypso. The Unmistakable Man is all outsize ambition, and outsize ambition tends to be hugely rewarding on the live stage, where catastrophe and majesty are equally likely — and sometimes equally entertaining. Look for River City Extension to make the most of this high-profile spot at the 2011 Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I.
