Not much in jazz combines the churchy moan and shaking hip quite like a Hammond B-3 organ. And Joey DeFrancesco is one of its modern masters — he grew up around the instrument since birth (his father is also a jazz organist), cut his first major-label album in his teens and has been honing his innate swing instincts since then. He's 40 now, and will celebrate with an eponymous album in September; he brought a soulful trio to Newport, and the Harbor Stage crowd didn't let it walk off without a short encore.
Personnel: Joey DeFrancesco, organ/voice; Rick Zunigar, guitar; Ramon Banda, drums.
