You might not exactly expect one of the world's premier traditional jazz groups to play their regular gigs in exurban Boston. But the members of the New Black Eagle Jazz Band are experts in ragtime, early New Orleans and Chicago styles, and small group swing — and have been together in one form or another since 1971. The Black Eagles headed south to the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival to kick off action on the Harbor Stage with a joyously ambling set.
Personnel: Dave Whitney, trumpet; Bill Novick, clarinet/alto saxophone; Stan Vincent, trombone; Bob Pilsbury, piano; Peter Bullis, banjo; Jesse Williams, bass; Bill Reynolds, drums.
