UAW Talks With Chrysler Stall, Turn Focus To Ford

Contract talks between the United Auto Workers and Chrysler have stalled. So the union is turning its focus to Ford. Meanwhile, workers at General Motors will start voting on their agreement that was reached last week.

DAVID GREENE, host: NPR's business news starts with driving ahead on contract talks. Negotiations at Chrysler have stalled. Now the United Auto Workers Union is turning its focus to Ford to try and hammer out a deal with that car company. The union is aiming for a better deal for its members, though Ford says its labor costs are already higher than they are for other carmakers. Also complicating matters is union frustration over a pay package that Ford awarded to its CEO, Alan Mulally, earlier this year - more than $50 million for turning around the company.

Workers at General Motors, meanwhile, will start voting on the agreement their company reached with the UAW last week. It includes bonuses, profit sharing checks, and also raises for entry level workers.
