Rachael Yamagata is a vibrant singer-songwriter whose rich and sultry voice channels influences from jazz, pop, rock and blues. That array of styles makes sense, considering that Yamagata first honed her skills as a vocalist for the funk band Bumpus and lent her voice to three of its albums.

As she shifted into a solo career, Yamagata released her first full-length LP, Happenstance, in 2004. Her new album, Chesapeake, came out this month. With a smoky voice that swirls above her elegant keyboard melodies, the product is a whimsical yet heartbreaking ode to lost love. In anticipation of the album's release, Yamagata joined forces with her brother, director Josh Ruben, to produce a video for the single "Even If I Don't."
