Song: "Love to Get Used"

Artist: Matt Pond PA

CD: Spring Fools EP

Genre: Pop

Matt Pond often incorporates the seasons into his sweetly layered pop music, so the arrival of fall might not represent the best possible time to dig into an EP called Spring Fools. But it doesn't take more than a moment of that record's opening track to recognize that his group Matt Pond PA is a band for all seasons: As "Love to Get Used" churns its way through a cheery cycle of buildups and payoffs, it's enough summon a gust of flowery April air, no matter what month it might be.

Matt Pond PA often infuses its songs with a certain stately delicacy, but "Love to Get Used" isn't so subtle, functioning instead as an irresistible exercise in pop momentum. Each verse and chorus contains just a little more than the one before it (adding synth lines, backing vocals and so on) until it's virtually impossible not to bounce a knee in time with the insistent rhythm. Packaged therein is a message about letting go of fears — "Let's hang on to abandon / Let's hope we lose control" — that's perfect for summoning the spirit of springtime, any time of year.
