The bluegrass band The Greencards makes its fourth appearance on Mountain Stage here. The group's five-song set draws heavily from The Brick Album, and includes the hard-driving "Make It Out West," which was inspired by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers bassist Ron Blair, who quit the music business in the early '80s to open a bikini shop in Los Angeles.
Led by Australians Kym Warner (mandolin) and Carol Young (bass), The Greencards won "Best New Band" at the 2004 Austin Music Awards and received a nomination for "Best New Emerging Talent" at the 2004 Americana Awards. Texas singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen said of The Greencards' music, "It's the best bluegrass I've heard in 20 years." The band, now based in Austin, won "New/Emerging Artist of the Year" at the 2006 Americana Music Association Awards, and with the addition of fiddle phenom Tyler Andal and flatpicking champion Carl Miner, the group recently released The Brick Album, which was financed by fans and features appearances from Sam Bush and Vince Gill.
