Occupy Oakland Calls For Citywide Strike
RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:
Let's talk next about Oakland, California, a scene of one of the Occupy protests that have swept many cities. And today, Occupy Oakland is notching it up, calling for a citywide general strike.
STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:
Protesters want to march from downtown to the busy Port of Oakland, which they will attempt to shut down. Union workers at that port have a clause in their contract that allows them to honor certain kinds of picket lines, creating the possibility that they could legally disrupt business.
MONTAGNE: It's been a week since Oakland police clashed with protesters in an attempt to remove them from their demonstration site. On this day of the strike call, city offices are set to remain open, and the mayor's office is urging businesses not to close.
