Ha Ha Tonka makes its first appearance on today's Mountain Stage, recorded at the campus of Ohio University in Athens, with a set that features songs from the band's newest album, Death of a Decade. Taking its name from a state park in its members' native southeastern Missouri, the group was recently featured on the Ozarks episode of the Travel Channel's Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.
Ha Ha Tonka's sound pays homage to traditional folk and roots music while mixing in power-pop melodies and vocals. The group's instrumentation is primarily acoustic, and arguably integrates the mandolin more effectively than any rock band since Out of Time-era R.E.M. Still, during the show, Ha Ha Tonka's members put their instruments aside for "Hangman," a traditional a cappella number featuring four-part harmonies.
Ha Ha Tonka is followed by Juile Adams and the Mountain Stage band, with her take on Steve Earle's "Halo 'Round the Moon."
