This Week On Alt.Latino: Brazilian Lo-Fi, Mexican Pop Pleasures And More

This week we've got a pretty great mix of styles. We open with Karamelo Santo from Argentina, whose energetic anthem "Diente" is a pretty great tune to jump around to, especially if you're getting cramped in a cubicle. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a huge fan of ska, but this powerful tune is something Felix and I can agree on.

We then move on to the lo-fi sounds of Lê Almeida, brought to us by one of my favorite Brazilian indie labels: Transfusão Noise Records. The grimy, grungy sounds belong as much in Seattle in the 1990's as they do in a small studio space in Rio De Janeiro today.

But the real star this week is Mr. Felix Contreras and his lovely musical taste. The first time I heard Afro-Peruvian band Novalima was more than a year ago when Felix and I were taping our Alt.Latino pilot show. I found their music pleasant then, but this time around I was stunned. They are true to their Afro-Peruvian roots but unafraid to experiment with Latin funk and electronica. As a result, they sound a bit like Brazilian funk star Jorge Ben, but they never lose their weight. The song "A Pañar Algodón" off the upcoming album Kalimba is a melancholy tale of a black Peruvian headed to San Luis to pick cotton.

Felix also brought the new Quetzal album Imaginaries, and the self-titled song also had us dancing in the studio. Funky beats and thick choruses had me thinking of Crosby Stills and Nash. Much like Novalima, this is a band firmly rooted in tradition but unafraid to play with new styles.

Esta Semana En Alt.Latino: Rock Brasilero, Pop Mexicano Y Más

Esta semana tenemos una tremenda mezcla musical para compartir con ustedes. Comenzamos el show con Karamelo Santo, de Argentina. He mencionado anteriormente que no soy gran fanática de la música ska, pero esta canción esta tan buena que ambos Felix y yo podemos disfrutarla.

Luego pasamos a la onda lo-fi de la banda Lê Almeida, miembra de una de nuestras disqueras brasileras preferidas: Transfusão Noise Records. Ese sonido grunge, contaminado y a la vez hermoso, pertenece tanto en Seattle de los 90s como en un estudio de grabación en Rio de Janeiro hoy en día.

Pero la verdadera estrella del show de hoy es el Sr. Felix Contreras, con sus fantásticas selecciones musicales. La primera vez que oí a la banda peruana Novalima fue hace un año y medio, cuando Felix y yo grabamos el primer show de Alt.Latino. Me gustaron, pero esta vez me quedé boquiabierta. Se mantienen firmes en sus raíces afro peruanas, pero a la vez no tienen miedo de incorporar el funk latino y la música electrónica. El resultado me recuerda un poco a la estrella del funk brasileño Jorge Ben; sin embargo Novalima nunca pierde su peso histórico. La canción "A Pañar Algodón", de su próximo álbum, Kalimba, es la melancólica historia de un afro peruano que se va a San Luis a "A Pañar Algodón."

Felix también nos trajo Imaginaries, el maravilloso álbum nuevo de Quetzal. El ritmo y los coros de la canción me recordaron a Crosby Still and Nash. Al igual que Novalima, Quetzal es una banda fuertemente arraigada en la tradición, pero sin temor a probar cosas nuevas.
