Woodrow Wilson had a number of rivals. Like Mitt Romney, some of his biggest problems were caused by his own words, particularly in his book, A History of the American People wherein he claimed that some countries "of the south of Europe were disburdening themselves of the more sordid and hapless elements of their population." Charles Bartholomew depicts Wilson and two main rivals, Champ Clark and Oscar W. Underwood, who contested the Democratic nomination with Wilson through the party's convention, while Charles Bowers shows a less than impressive Wilson after his statements had been exposed.
