During my childhood summers, I was often dropped off at a family friend's house, where I discovered the most unusual and delicious treat: homemade sweet tomato jam. Like bacon and chocolate, strawberries and pepper or chocolate and chili, it's one of those combinations that might seem strange or unappetizing to the uninitiated, but actually work fantastically well.

That's a great analogy for this week's show, which is filled with unexpected pairings of musical flavors. Banda UÓ is a great example of techno brega, a style of northern Brazilian music that literally means "cheesy techno." It fuses 80's synth pop with a distinctly Brazilian feel. If that sounds scary, don't sweat it — the blend is smooth.

Kumbia Queers is a project by Mexican and Argentine musicians. They blend two aesthetics that have traditionally been opposed, bringing LGBT punk rock lyrics to the typically male, often sexist vibe of Argentine cumbia. The result? Infectiously danceable music and hilarious parodies of macho attitudes. In both these cases, combinations that could be catastrophic sound innovative, smart and fun.

We've got so much amazing new music on this week's show, and as always we want to hear from you. What have you listened to lately that has surprised you? (And if know where to get good tomato jam, we're all ears.)

———————————————————————————————————————————-
