AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:

From NPR News, this is ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. I'm Audie Cornish.

ROBERT SIEGEL, HOST:

And I'm Robert Siegel. Today is December 12, 2012.

CORNISH: 12-12-12, the last of its kind, at least in this century.

SIEGEL: So people are seizing on the opportunity to make it count. And what better place to do it than...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "VIVA LAS VEGAS")

ELVIS PRESLEY: (Singing) Viva Las Vegas, viva Las Vegas.

AIMEE STEPHENS: We have 81 weddings at our chapel today.

(LAUGHTER)

CORNISH: That's Aimee Stephens, director of marketing at Chapel of the Flowers in Las Vegas.

JERRY WARRELL: Oh, a few hundred.

SIEGEL: That's Jerry Warrell, wedding coordinator at the Little White Wedding Chapel.

JAMIE RICHARDS: We're doing 100 weddings today.

CORNISH: And that's Jamie Richards, co-owner of the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel. So how does this compare to every other day of the year?

RICHARDS: On a normal weekday, we can do anywhere from five to 15, something like that.

SIEGEL: But, of course, today, along with past dates such as 7-7-7 and last year's 11-11-11, is special, and Richards says business is booming.

RICHARDS: We did several last night from midnight on, then we took a break, and then we started again at 7 o'clock this morning.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HERE COMES THE BRIDE")

CORNISH: Which means if you're looking to get hitched today in Vegas, you may need to walk a bit faster down that aisle.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HERE COMES THE BRIDE")

CORNISH: Maybe a little faster.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HERE COMES THE BRIDE")

CORNISH: OK, maybe too fast.

SIEGEL: Of course, if you're going to tie the knot in Vegas, you might as well do it in style. Jamie Richards recommends the 12-12-12 pink Cadillac package at the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel.

RICHARDS: Elvis sings three songs, performs the ceremony. They enter in a pink Cadillac. There's a showgirl. It's really fun. We have a showgirl come down the aisle before you and dance during the wedding, and then pose for pictures with Elvis and the couple afterwards.

CORNISH: Theatrics aside, Aimee Stephens of the Chapel of the Flowers says people choose to marry on days like today because they feel they're part of something larger and more practically...

STEPHENS: We've also found a common theme that brides like it because it's easy for their husbands to remember their anniversary.

SIEGEL: Yes. For newlyweds, a day to remember on a date that's pretty hard to forget.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "I CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU")

PRESLEY: (Singing) Wise men say only fools rush in, but I can't help falling in love with you.
