I have a confession to make: I got into radio because I'm an unbelievably shy person. Radio lets me talk to thousands of people I might be too timid to meet in real life. It also lets me reach out to folks in remote places I might never visit, and whose experiences fascinate me.

We get a lot of listeners who write in thanking us for introducing them to new music — guests and aspects of Latin culture they might not have previously encountered. But Felix and I are truly grateful for the musical suggestions we receive from our audience. We've learned more than we could have imagined when we first embarked on this journey.

A few weeks ago, we shared our favorite music of 2012. This week, we turn the mic over to our listeners: After taking a poll to determine your favorite music, we called a handful and chatted for a while as part of this week's show. The conversations were wonderful: Our listeners are musically educated, passionate and insightful.

Some of your picks aligned with ours: Everyone loves Ana Tijoux, and we can all come together to bond over Bomba Estereo and Carla Morrison. But we also got a taste of some artists we weren't able to include in our Best of 2012 show, like the lovely Mexican ballad singer Natalia Lafourcade and salsa performers Alexander Abreu and Havana d' Primera.

As always, thank you for tuning in and sharing your thoughts and musical discoveries with us. Here's to keeping the conversation going in 2013.
