Rev. Run's Music To Keep Sparks Flying

Joseph Simmons, also known as 'Run' of Run DMC, went from rap pioneer to preacher. When he needs to keep the love flowing in his marriage, he turns on a little Sade. For Tell Me More's 'In Your Ear' series, Rev. Run shares why he's connected to the song "Your Love is King."

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

And now it's time for the occasional series we call In Your Ear. That's when some of the guests on our program tell us about the songs that are in heavy rotation in their music collections.

Today, we get the playlist of Rev. Run. You might remember him from the rap group Run DMC. He spoke with us last December about his transformation from rapper to reverend. After our conversation, Rev. Run told us about the songs he listens to to keep the sparks flying in his marriage.

REV. RUN: Hey, this is Rev. Run and what's in my ear right now, to tell the truth, is - Tyrese Gibson has an album called "Open Invitation." There's a record called "Best of Me."

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BEST OF ME")

TYRESE GIBSON: (Singing) What a joy it is to be loved by you. My most precious gift, my guardian angel, I believe God sent you here to slow me down and so, whatever it takes, I'm going to keep you around, baby.

RUN: I play it quite a bit for my wife because he sings, you bring out the best in me, and it really gets me energized and it's really a message that I'd like for my wife to hear, so we listen to it together.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BEST OF ME")

GIBSON: (Singing) Because you are the best baby and, if I had to do it again, I'd still choose you, girl. You bring out the best in me 'cause you are the best, baby.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "YOUR LOVE IS KING")

RUN: And the last song that's playing in my ear is "Your Love is King" by Sade.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "YOUR LOVE IS KING")

SADE: (Singing) Your love is king. Crown you in my heart. Your love is king.

RUN: I really listen to Sade because it's so smooth and so calm and my wife introduced me to that music years ago when we were younger and I've been caught on it ever since, but "Your Love is King" is a really good one.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "YOUR LOVE IS KING")

SADE: (Singing) ...making my soul sing, tearing the very heart of me. I'm crying out for more. Your love is king.

MARTIN: That was Rev. Run telling us what's playing in his ear. To hear my previous conversation with him, you can go to NPR.org, click on the Programs tab and then TELL ME MORE.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "YOUR LOVE IS KING")

SADE: (Singing) ...round and round my head.
