Earlier this year, when NPR Music told us we'd present our first Latin Alternative showcase at South by Southwest, we were asked to dream up the most fantastic, mind-blowing lineup we could possibly imagine. I jokingly told my co-host, Felix Contreras, that we should get the legendary Mexican rock band Café Tacvba, to which he jokingly responded that we should just throw in the iconic group Molotov. I might have sarcastically quipped that we should also inquire about The Rolling Stones' availability.

The joke was on us. When Felix and I found out we actually would host a night on March 14 at Auditorium Shores alongside Café Tacvba, Molotov and Bajofondo, we were stunned. I can think of few musicians as relevant to Latin music as these: Café Tacvba practically invented the genre of Latin rock, by fusing native Latin American folk styles with rock 'n' roll and electronica. With its unique blend of humor, politics, rage and irreverence, Molotov echoes young Latinos everywhere. And Bajofondo happens to be fronted by Oscar-winning Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who wrote the scores for Brokeback Mountain, Babel and Motorcycle Diaries.

Our showcase at Auditorium Shores will be free and open to the public in Austin, with doors opening at 4 p.m. CT. We'll be joined by Michael Crockett, host of KUT's Horizontes radio program in Austin.

If you won't be in Austin next week, don't worry: We're recording and filming the show, so check for highlights on NPR Music and Alt.Latino soon after the show.

You can also catch Cafe Tacvba in the live broadcast of NPR Music's official SXSW showcase at Stubb's on March 13, where the band will be joined by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and more.
