THE RACE CARD PROJECT WINS PEABODY AWARD
April 2, 2014; Washington, D.C. – The Race Card Project, the website and NPR broadcast series created by NPR host and special correspondent Michele Norris, has earned a 2014 George Foster Peabody Award. The Race Card Project invites people to distill thoughts on race and identity into six word stories, and a partnership with NPR places the stories at the center of reports broadcast to millions of Morning Edition listeners and also brings the illuminating narratives to the stage for live audiences across the country through the organization's events practice NPR Presents.
"Producer Walter Ray Watson and I are so very grateful to all those who have shared their stories with us," says Norris. "That I was en route to Birmingham, Alabama, when this news was announced feels like a remarkable coincidence. On behalf of The Race Card Project team and NPR's Morning Edition: color us happy! And cue the Pharrell!"
The award is shared with The Race Card Project content administrator Melissa Bear, web designer Adrian Kinloch and web developer Dave Patrick.
Norris has collected tens of thousands of these six-word essays surrounding the complex and shifting story of race in the U.S. The stories are shared on postcards and letters, tweets, texts and electronic website submissions. The Race Card stories have also inspired a theatrical event.

The Race Card Project's Peabody honor today marks 61 nods to NPR and NPR programming by the prestigious awards program, now in its 73rd year of recognizing excellence in work by radio and television stations, networks, webcasters, producing organizations and individuals.
