Diversity at NPR
"National Public Radio will serve the individual; it will promote personal growth rather than corporate gains; it will regard the individual differences among men with respect and joy rather than derision and hate; it will celebrate the human experience as infinitely varied rather than vacuous and banal; it will encourage a sense of active, constructive participation, rather than apathetic helplessness."
-- Bill Siemering, NPR Co-Founder
Those words still ring true today. NPR employs more than 700 people around the world, people that represent a wide range of different generations, cultural histories, racial and sexual identities, educational backgrounds, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities, and professional aspirations.
At NPR, we value such diversity. It enriches our relationship with the people we work with and strengthens our service to the millions of listeners we reach every week.
Add your voice to our workplace and to our programs
NPR is aggressively recruiting individuals with strong interest in public radio, solid credentials, and diverse perspectives. Please visit our job postings or contact our Human Resources division at employment@npr.org. To help you join the great - and growing - talents in public radio, we offer a variety of training programs:
NPR’s Next Generation Radio Project: In partnership with organizations such as AAJA, NABJ, NAHJ, NAJA, and NLGJA, NPR co-ordinates week-long training sessions bringing professional producers, editors, and reporters together with students interested in radio and journalism. Attendees report and produce their own radio stories after participation in teaching sessions on recording techniques, writing, voice and on-air presentation, and audio production. For more details e-mail nextgenerationradio@npr.org.
NPR’s Internship Program: NPR offers internships at its national headquarters in Washington, DC, and at our NPR West studios in Los Angeles, CA. NPR’s internship program provides students and recent graduates with an opportunity to learn about broadcasting and supporting fields, including law, communications, and research. Summer interns are paid and work together to produce a radio program. Visit npr.org for an application and more details or e-mail internship@npr.org.
The Joan B. Kroc Fellowships: Following the generous bequest to NPR from the late Joan B. Kroc, NPR has launched three, year-long, paid fellowship opportunities that offer rigorous, hands-on training in every aspect of public radio journalism - writing, reporting, producing, and editing, for both radio and the Web. Fellows work at NPR headquarters in Washington, DC, and also spend time at an NPR member station.
NPR: Committed to leadership in diversity
Diversity is a fundamental part of everything we do at NPR, and of our ability to offer relevant news, culture, and entertainment programming to an increasingly diverse public. Diversity is a cornerstone of our recruitment, programming, and talent development initiatives.
Spearheading our efforts is our director of diversity management, a member of NPR's senior management team who works with leaders and staff members across the organization to ensure that NPR is an inclusive, productive workplace.
With strong support from NPR's senior management, employees from across the organization have taken part in our Diversity Initiative, an on-going project that is shaping NPR’s commitment to diversity in new and meaningful ways. From the creation of NPR’s director of diversity management position to mentoring programs — the group’s work has had a visible impact on daily life at NPR.
