Hae-Ok Miller
University of California, Berkeley
Hae-Ok Miller is a first time student for the AAJA's Radio Project "The Beat." A sophomore at Vista Community College, she plans to transfer to U.C. Berkeley. She graduated from Youth Radio's broadcast journalism program, and now works as a freelance reporter for the Berkeley-based newsroom. Hae-Ok profiles a San Francisco band "Rubymar," a band she thinks is on the verge of being discovered.

Dongwoo Lee

Dongwoo Lee is a junior at the University of Georgia, majoring in biology. He immigrated from Su Won, South Korea in 1991. So why is he doing this radio project? Well, he'd like to write radio commentaries as his side-work in the future. What he really wants to be is a doctor. This is the first time he's doing any kind of radio and for "The Beat," Dongwoo tells us about becoming an "American."

Jennifer Scott
University of San Francisco
Perhaps the happiest person you will ever meet is Jennifer Scott. Always with a smiling face, Jennifer believes that "the greatest gift you can give a person is a smile to make their day." She recently graduated from the University of San Francisco with degrees in Communication and Business Administration. Jennifer is also a recipient of the 2000 National AAJA award, the Stanford Chen Scholarship, and the Freedom Forum's Chips Quinn Memorial Scholarship. Jennifer's story is on the Art of Hula Dancing.

Stephanie Martija
Diablo Community College, Concord, CA
Stephanie Martija is a newly minted high school graduate. In the summer of ninety nine she was involved in a youth program called "Youth Radio", in which she had an opportunity to produce a radio show, and is currently interning for the commentary writing as a peer teacher. She also continues to explore the wonderful world of radio through her internship at Wild 94.9, a bay area commercial radio station as a promotions team member. For "The Beat," Stephanie spent six hours following a promotions team member as he worked Redwood City, California.

Christine Byun
Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill
Christine Byun is a California girl trapped in the Midwest. Although she
misses the Pacific Ocean, she is enjoying her internship at Chicago's
CBS television affiliate. She will be a junior at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. Also, Christine is the noon anchor at her school radio station, WNUR 89.3. For "The Beat" Christine visits San Francisco's "The International Hotel." It's been 24 years since this famous hotel was torn down. She'll talk with members of the Asian-American community about what that hotel meant to them and the city.
