Listen to the 30-minute magazine we produced during the conference

Elizabeth Castro

Elizabeth Castro - Texas State University, San Antonio, TX
Mentor: Ruxandra Guidi, Deputy Producer, Latino USA.
Elizabeth spent four years at KTSW-FM, a length of time that is rare for anyone I have apply for any of our projects. She submitted an interesting cultural story on CD on San Antonio's "Empanada Day."

Allison Hertz

Allison Hertz - Yale University, New Haven, Conn.
Mentor: Sidsel Overgaard, reporter, WAMU in Washington DC and the director of Youth Voices, their high school radio initiative.
Allison is News Director at WYBC and interned at CBS Radio in DC this past summer. Allie came in to NPR a few times this past summer to talk about re-constructing the newsroom at WYBC and even met with Managing Editor Bill Marimow on the development of "beats" for college journalists. Allie will be working with ."

Erik Howard

Erik Howard - Univ. of Tennessee-Chattanooga, Chattanooga, TN
Mentor: Annie Wu, former producer for Weekend All Things Considered and reporter for WAMU in Washington, D.C.
Erik has no "real" radio experience but wants to produce a "diary" from his trip this summer to Southern India. This is the trip where his student colleague Meredith filed "dispatches" for the next gen website between May and August. Erik will get extra attention as the Morning Edition host for the local NPR station in Chattanooga went on the trip and wants to learn as well about producing stories.

Kristin Murdock

Kristin Murdock - Morehead State University, Morehead, KY

Mentor: Beth Graham, News Director, WVPE, Elkhart, Indiana.
Kristin sent a really interesting story she called "Food Deserts." Those are large swaths of territory in Eastern Kentucky where you cannot find a decent, full-service grocery store. We also liked her application. It was quite complete and specific. We liked the effort she put into making that first impression.

Julia Romano

Julia Romano - Univ of California-Los Angeles, CA

Julia started her cover letter in a way that we had never seen. Simply, she said, I can't help myself. Four words and a lot of intrigue. I HAD to keep reading. It turns out she cannot keep herself from wanting to be an NPR correspondent someday. Julia has done a lot of producing as an intern for NPR's "Radio Expeditions" but now wants to write, voice and produce her own story, which she has never done.

Jonathan Viggliotti

Jonathan Viggliotti - Fordham University, The Bronx, NY
Mentor: Bill Zeeble, veteran reporter for NPR member station KERA,Dallas
Jonathan has filed news spots for NPR from WFUV at Fordham. He sent videotape along with TWO CDs of his work. For us, that's just fine. WFUV is a legendary community radio station in the New York area and he comes recommended by Julianne Welby, former reporter for NPR station WAMU in Washington, D.C. Wait! I suspect there is something strange going on here!! That's the third time we've mentioned that station. We're going to push him to turn around a post-presidential election piece... starting his reporting the morning after we find out who won.

Also working on this project is Celeste Headlee, arts reporter for NPR member station WDET in Detroit. Celeste was a participant with our project at the 2000 National Association of Black Journalists convention in Phoenix and mentored with us again in Phoenix for the 2001 National Association of Hispanic Journalists "Radio Ondas" project. Celeste will be the project's Managing Editor.
