CUNY Conference
Mentors from NPR and Bloomberg Radio teamed up with students attending five schools within the City University of New York
for a one-week radio training project.
 Joyce Vargas
|
Joyce Vargas is 24, and attends Borough of Manhattan Community College for Film and Video. Born and raised in Brooklyn, going to the movies is one of Joyce's favorite pastimes. She has a twin sister who is a fifth grade school teacher. Another love is baseball and her two dogs Milo, and Sonny.

 George Diaz
|
George was born in Spanish Harlem and attended mostly Catholic schools. He wrote for his elementary school newspaper, continued with his high school paper, The Raven, and decided then to pursue a career in journalism.
Now he's a junior at the City College of New York, studying print, radio and television. In his Radio Journalism class, they produce a half-hour news program every other week. Thursday, he gives two to four minute news briefs on the radio on sports, international, national and local news. He can be heard on WHCR 90.3 FM, the Voice of Harlem.

 Elissa Nieves
|
Elissa Nieves is 21 years old and a student at Kingsborough Community College. She was music director at Kingsborough's radio station, WKRB-FM, and is now the president. She is also vice-president of KCC-TV. She worked as a board operator for the Brooklyn Cyclones and as a lab technician for College Now in radio and television. Radio has been her passion since the age of 13.

 Chad Scott
|
Chad Scott joined WHCR-FM in 2004 as the host of "A Calm Ride with Kinfolk." He also broadcasts college basketball games for the Beavers, and serves as announcer at the annual spring commencement at Medgar Evers College. In 2005, he became a sportscaster for the nationally syndicated "Star and Bucwild Show" on WWPR-FM. Chad graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism from The City College of New York in June 2006.

 Katherine Larkai
|
Katherine Larkai says she is a natural storyteller. "I know this because I spend all day taking in details and at the end of the day, I have to narrate it." Growing up in Botswana, her interest in journalism grew after she volunteered at a local newspaper after high school. After working for the newspaper on and off for 2 years while earning a diploma in journalism in Johannesburg, South Africa, she branched into radio reporting and anchoring. She is currently a junior at Brooklyn College, majoring in journalism with a minor in TV/Radio.

 Shakima Swain
|
Shakima Swain is a Guyanese-American who has won numerous spelling bees. Her start in radio began in 2002 at a radio program called “Radio Rookies” at public radio station WNYC. Since then, she has produced three stories that aired nationally, one of which won an award from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). Shakima enjoys radio for two reasons: the unlimited creativity and the non-existent dress code.
