The $100,000 Lisp

William Hoffman brings us another bit of fiction from New York’s very own Top Tomato.

The following is based on a true story.  The names and locations have been changed.

Cash register drawers crunch in and out.  Shopping carts weave while careful hands pick at pumpkins, squash, and sweet potatoes. A cluster of men and women hand off turkeys to one another, all of them like experts, assessing the various weights and sizes, searching for the perfect bird.

Mornin’ Miss Binkley

William Hoffman gives us a story about dirt. He says he was reminded of this tale he wrote awhile ago after moving to New York for this internship, and discovering just how hard it is to keep clean in the Dirty Apple.

Tomorrow won’t be like today. Tomorrow WON’T be like today. Every mornin’, I like to say this to myself. Sometimes I go and say it three times but usually only twice. And I always say it out loud. ‘Cause thinking and saying are two totally different things. Like this one time I saw my neighbor Stan’s wife skimmin’ her swimmin’ pool and I thought ‘MaMa, I damn wish I was Stan’ but alls I actually said out loud was “Mornin’ Miss Binkley” and did my best to keep outta her way. You see? I like to start each day by puttin’ it in its place. For the most part, I keep a very neat bedroom, and I like my days just the same. (more…)
