STORYTELLING WITH NEDA ULABY
Who's doing what? Pitches and Partners.
With lots on the minds of interns, those participating in
Intern Edition
got together for the second official meeting. Pitches were discussed and producers
were paired with reporters. When selecting a topic, remember to be focused,
think sound (!!!), and make it feasible. Other great story suggestions included:
selecting a local story and one that can stand out (i.e. be newsworthy). Other
exciting news for
Intern Edition is that a new
blog
will be added, including anything from intern thoughts to internship tasks.
Also,
Neda Ulaby, NPR Arts Reporter, discussed what is and is not a story.
Some of her advice:
- It is easier to turn a small story into a big one.
- Think sound - it often tells the story - and have a scene!
- Check transcripts to see what has been done.
- Check ENPS Daybook to see what is going on in the city (for story ideas).
- Always remember ethics.

Intern-Mentees teamed with NPR-Mentors
Mentor Kathie Miller chats with Mentee Meredith Cook.
MENTOR/MENTEE MIXER
More than 30 Interns took part in "Connections," NPR's Mentorship Program this
summer. A program designed to place an NPR staff-mentor with an intern-mentee,
"Connections" will offer extra support and motivation for participating interns
dealing with life, work and goals. Mentors, like mentees, volunteer their
time and make a commitment to one another, as well as the Connections Program,
for one full year. Each intern-mentee is teamed with their own mentor based
on his or her likes, interests and aspirations.
