Student and Mentors

Shayla Reaves
Read Shayla's intro and read the script for Atlanta security
Listen to Shayla's story
The ultimate dream job of Shayla, a senior at Northwestern University? Host of the Today Show. The bulk of her experience has been in television, but she wants to try everything at least once. Shayla was named after a fashion show commentator from the 80s (on Ebony Fashion Fair). She just finished a 1-year term as president of the NABJ student chapter at her school.
Shayla's Mentor: Tandaleya Wilder, News Director, WSHU, Fairfield, CT

Sabrina Hersi-Issa

Listen to Sabrina's story
Sabrina is a fifth-year senior at Ohio State University, a news assistant at WOSU-AM, and is of Somali heritage. She says Somali food is similar to Ethiopian, but spicier. So spicy, in fact, that it is traditionally served with a banana, to mitigate the heat. She spent last summer studying human rights and conflict resolution at the University of Bologna, in Italy.
Sabrina's Mentor: Christopher Johnson, Producer, News & Notes with Ed Gordon, Los Angeles, CA

Angela Taylor
Read Angela's intro and the script for NABJ's 30th Anniversary
Listen to Angela's story
Angela graduated from Duquesne University this year, but she has never ridden the famous Duquesne Incline. She was a student reporter at WDUQ-FM, and loves radio, but it was TV where she found it easier to get a job. She is set to start as web producer/writer at KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh. Angela loves going to Pirates games.
Angela's Mentor: Bob Butler, Vice President of Diversity, Infinity Broadcasting

Marissa Harris
Read Marissa's intro and her Marquetta Textiles script
Listen to Marissa's story
In May, Marissa graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with scholastic honors as a theater-journalism double major. Before graduating, Marissa spent a semester abroad in London. Marissa loves to read, is an avid "Star Wars" fan, and always, always makes room for Jell-O. She is currently penning her first full-length drama "The Auction", which centers on a privileged mulatto slave named Jacqueline and her flight to freedom.
Marissa's Mentor: Sarah Mobley, Supervising Producer, Morning Edition Washington, DC

Akilah Amapindi
Read Akilah's intro and the script of Mega-Church Phenomenon
Listen to Akilah's story
Akilah was born in Jamaica but reared in Staten Island, NY. She is a 2004 graduate of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Akilah wrote for her college newspaper —the Kenyon Collegian — and even founded a service sorority on campus. But her most rewarding experience was her post-graduate internship at the National Broadcasting Corporation in Windhoek, Namibia in Southern Africa.
