July 1, 2004

Amie McLain National desk intern Amie McLain was selected by the National Association of Black Journalists to attend the Pan-African Youth Leadership Summit in Dakar, Senegal June 27 - 30. Amie, a rising senior at Howard University in Washington, D.C., was one of only three young journalists chosen by the NABJ to attend.

The Summit was organized by the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Millennium Campaign and an international non-governmental organization, the Global Peace Initiative of Women, with support from the government of Senegal.

It is part of Africa 2015, the Africa-wide campaign to mobilize support for the eight Millennium Development Goals, which was endorsed by all United Nations member states in 2000. These 190 governments made commitments to reduce poverty by half, ensure universal quality education, empower women, reduce mortality rates in mothers and children, halt the spread of HIV/AIDS and achieve environmental stability by 2015.

The Summit aims to help young leaders develop programs that address these issues and to provide a global platform for the voices of talented young African professionals.
