Interns Meet 'The Stars of C-SPAN'

July 21: Press Tour of the Capitol

by IE Communications Staff

Sara Robertson of the Senate press gallery for radio and television guided the NPR interns on a press tour of the U.S. Capitol. Ms. Robertson stood at a podium with a U.S. Senate seal and gave an overview of the Senate press gallery. Her office is responsible for issuing the press credentials and arranging national press conferences.

"The best part of my job is that I'm in the middle of it all. It's an exciting place to work," Robertson said.

As she spoke, a CNBC cameraman was stretched out across five chairs in the front row, trying to get some sleep.

"You're snoring!" Ms. Robertson blurted out mid-talk, tossing a pen onto the cameraman's slumbering form.

"Sorry!" He woke up enough to roll over and mutter, "Three broken noses."

In the Senate chamber, Senator Hatch of Utah spoke to a nearly empty Senate floor in support of the contentious nomination of Henry Saad to a federal judgeship.

Robertson said there are typically only one or two senators on the floor: one speaking and one waiting to speak. An intern asked whom the Senator was addressing. Ms. Robertson answered, "Oh, he's talking to C-SPAN."
