Behind the Scenes at NPR

Reporter: Cat McDonald
Producer: Dana Maier

Did you ever wonder how NPR's hosts and commentators got their start? I know I did. So I caught up with some of them this summer to talk about their experience, background and the nature of their work. It takes lots of work, patience and a level head to be a good on-air host, but they make it sound easy.

The full story is in the works, but until then, please enjoy the excerpts below.

NPR newscaster Corey Flintoff started his radio career at bilingual station in a remote Alaska town. He even learned to do the station identification in Yupik, an Eskimo language.

For inspiration, All Things Considered host Michele Norris keeps this poem thumb-tacked over her desk.

I asked Bob Boilen, All Songs Considered host and All Things Considered director, what he'd be doing if he weren't at NPR.
