NPR® News Presents: The Changing Face of America Nationwide Live Forum Broadcast from Orlando, Florida
Thursday, May 25, 2000 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Orlando, Florida -- As part of "The Changing
Face of America" series, NPR®'s midday call-in program Talk of the Nation®
joins with NPR® member station 90.7 WMFE FM for a nationwide town hall
forum, broadcast live from Marks Street Senior Recreation Complex at 99 East
Marks Street in Orlando. The live broadcast will take place on Thursday, May
25 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM EST. (Check listings for local stations and times.)
The live broadcast forum is open to the
public. Audience members will have the opportunity to participate in the
interactive discussion with Talk of the Nation host Juan Williams and
special guests. The public should call (407) 273-2300 ext.153 for
reservations or more information. Interested media do not need reservations,
but should contact Jessamyn Sarmiento at 202-414-2307 for more information.
The national audience and Orlando residents who are unable to attend the
live broadcast can join the discussion by calling 1 (800) 989-TALK.
In the first hour, Talk of the Nation host
Juan Williams and special guests will engage in a lively discussion about
the elderly in America. Being elderly is different than it was just a few
years ago. Not only are people living longer, but they are also more active.
How is living a longer, more vigorous life affecting the American family? In
the second hour, the discussion will focus on generational and ethnic
conflict issues. Potential clashes are developing between an older, wealthy,
white population and a younger, poorer, ethnically diverse one. Chasms that
divide races and age groups can be very destructive. Can Florida - and the
rest of the nation - meet the challenge?
"The Changing Face of America," is an
18-month-long series that tells the stories of regular, everyday Americans
and the issues they face at a time of dramatic and rapid change. As part of
this series, NPR's Talk of the Nation is traveling to cities and towns
across America for monthly broadcast forums before live audiences.
Previously, Talk of the Nation has visited Prince George's County, Maryland;
Austin, Texas; and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
