NPR's Talk of the Nation and WFAE 90.7 FM Broadcast Live
From Spirit Square's McGlohon Theater in Charlotte, NC,
Thursday, August 31, 2000
Charlotte is a shining example of the new South,
showing both the positive effects of economic growth and the difficulties
associated with it. Juan Williams, host of NPR's Talk of the Nation will
lead a live broadcast forum on Thursday, August 31, joined by special
guests, including Charlotte Mayor Patrick McCrory, to discuss Charlotte's
transition from a regional railroad hub to a financial metropolis second
only to New York City.
Along with the economic transition, the city is
facing an influx of new residents with diverse backgrounds, new businesses
and new difficulties usually associated with larger northern cities. The
discussion, which will broadcast live from Spirit Square as part of the NPR
News series The Changing Face of America, will focus on emerging issues
facing Charlotte as it expands.
NPR's midday call-in program Talk of the Nation is
traveling to cities and towns across America for monthly radio broadcasts
before live audiences. These meetings occur in conjunction with programming
on Morning Edition and All Things Considered. The Changing Face of America is supported by a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts.
NPR is partnering with WFAE 90.7fm for this special
