NPR and bigchalk.com Bring Election Coverage Curricula To America's Classrooms via New Web Resource

New York and Washington, DC -- November 1, 2000: National Public Radio® (NPR®) and bigchalk.com, a K-12 online education network, have launched Classroom Radio, an educational Web resource that brings NPR election coverage to America's classrooms. Using RealAudio, Classroom Radio (www.bigchalk.com/bc/npr) combines NPR audio reports about Election 2000 and key, national issues from Morning Edition® with Bob Edwards, All Things Considered®and Talk of the Nation® with lesson plans for 5-12 grade students.

"Now that this year's election campaigns are in full swing, students of all ages are exposed to political topics and important, national issues on a daily basis," said Dr. Barbara Kurshan, Executive Vice President and Chief Education Officer. "These are important classroom topics because they help students understand the election process and prepares them to become active, voting citizens in the future."

Featured elements of Classroom Radio include: The Daily Race, which provides election updates with accompanying lesson plans on a daily basis; Election Views, a weekly news feature about the campaign process; and Other News, weekly curricula based on a variety of national news topics.

"This collaborative Web resource helps teachers and students to work through the various angles and tough questions inherent in the election process. It enables students to watch how the campaign unfolds on a day-to-day basis," said MJ Bear, Vice President for NPR Onlinesm.

To make it easy for students to find linked information, Classroom Radio lesson plans are archived, and accompanied by audio links to related NPR news stories. Classroom Radio also provides students with detailed information about this election's presidential candidates.
