Rising Star Vocalist Rene Marie, In Rehearsal
Radio/Web Show Delves Into The Creative Process

WASHINGTON, DC- In Rehearsal, (, the radio/Web show that provides an intimate glimpse into the creative process of great musicians from diverse traditions, features jazz vocalist René Marie in its upcoming edition. René Marie, who recently won her second consecutive award for best jazz vocalist, will be profiled on beginning Thursday, May 2, in advance of a special segment on NPR's Weekend All Things Considered on Sunday, May 5. The Web feature will be available to visitors throughout 2002.

In Rehearsal on the Web uses audio, video, text and pictures to give Internet audiences a fascinating, interactive way to experience creativity in development from the musician's point of view. Marie talks about her music in her own words, sharing stories about her life and family, her musical style, her major influences and the unusual path that led to her re-emergence as a performer in her 40s.

The In Rehearsal Web site features video of Marie rehearsing Love for Sale, exclusive Web-only interviews, fascinating raw sound of Marie and her musicians interacting as they get to work on a new song, and Marie and the band performing the song live for the first time. On May 5, In Rehearsal at will add audio from Weekend All Things Considered.

A self-taught jazz vocalist, René Marie has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson. Marie started singing professionally at 15 with an R&B band in Roanoke, VA, her hometown. She married one of her band mates at age 18 and set aside her career for more than 20 years to raise a family. In her early 40s, encouraged by her sons, she began singing in front of audiences in Roanoke, Richmond, and beyond, which led to audience acclaim, a self-produced CD, and two releases from MAXJAZZ, including the most recent, Vertigo, which was named to many "Best Of' lists in 2001, including JazzTimes top 50. René Marie is touring the U.S. throughout 2002.
